A worthy successor to the immensely successful issue of the symphonies of Shostakovich (winner of the Cannes Classical Awards Record of the Year): the complete 15 String Quartets of the Russian master. In his string quartets Shostakovich voiced his deepest and most profound thoughts, his despair, his melancholy, his emptiness and also his hope. The quartets have become regular concert repertoire, and are often performed as a cycle.
Excellent recordings by the young Belgian Quartet “Rubio Quartet”, who performed the cycle already several times, and have now recorded it.
The New York Concert Review wrote about their Carnegie Hall debut: “they take their technique completely for granted, meeting every challenge with confident assurance; intonation, unanimity of ensemble, phrasing and dynamics are impeccable, voices are taken over seamlessly and stand out naturally in a colourful tapestry of lines”.
