Dmitri Shostakovich wrote 6 solo concertos, 2 each for piano, violin and cello. They show the composer in a variety of guises from light-hearted to profoundly sad. All concertos reveal several facets of this very versatile talent.
Especially noteworthy are the recordings of the violin concertos included. David Oistrakh premiered both of them. The second Shostakovich had written for the sixtieth birthday of this famous violinist. This set includes historical recordings made by Oistrakh only months after the first performances of the concertos.
Cristina Ortiz plays both piano concertos; Alexander Ivaskin the cello concertos.
