Love Russian music? Or romantic chamber music? Well this release combines the two, with compositions for piano, violin and cello by some of Russia’s most prominent composers.
Orchestral music dominated the classical output in Russia in the second half of the nineteenth century. With the exception of Sergey Taneyev Russian composers only occasionally occupied themselves with small instrumental ensembles. The music for piano trio seems to have been an ideal means to express personal emotions. No less than three trios on these CD’s were written as an immediate reaction to the death of a dear friend. The trios greatly vary in character but have intimacy in common.
The Borodin Trio and The Amsterdam Chamber Music Society perform the music by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Arensky, Taneyev and Shostakovich (written half a century later than the other pieces) with warmth and intensity. A great asset to any chamber music collection.
