Antonin Dvo?ák, together with Smetana and Janá?ek, is considered the most important nationalist composer of what is now known as the Czech republic. His music not just incorporates folk music but also influences of the Classical composers (whom he admired) and for instance of his close friend Brahms.
In his symphonies, however, he let the classical influence prevail and found other outlets for his national aspirations, particularly the contagious Slavonic Dances.
Of his nine symphonies the last one, ‘From the new world’, is by far the most popular. Though it is not his best one – the seventh is usually indicated as such. It has greater emotional depth than any of the other symphonies. Numbers one and two are definitely the weakest two of the entire set.
Excellent performances by some of the best Dvo?ák interpreters of today: Mariss Jansons, Neeme Järvi and particularly Ji?í B?lohlávek.
