The Chieftans' pipes player Paddy Moloney is the mastermind of this soundtrack album. Long Journey Home is a film about the complicated journey of the Irish in America, and over the years, Moloney's had enough experience mixing Irish and American musical traditions to make him the perfect man for the job. Moloney proves his smarts by bringing in some of his most talented pals from the pop world, like Van Morrison (who sings on a lushly orchestrated version of the traditional ballad "Shenandoah") and Elvis Costello (who sings the title tune, which he co-wrote with Moloney). More traditional Irish artists like Mary Black and Liam O Maonlai are also on hand to tilt the balance back towards the old homeland, and wild cards like country singer Vince Gill are thrown in to make Long Journey Home an eclectic but emotionally consistent mix of styles..
